What’s Your Dream Lifestyle?

January 24, 2011

in thinking out loud

I read a lot of lifestyle design sites…..probably too many, and travel and location independence is a big theme.  I wonder though, and this is why I’m asking the question, is this lifestyle design for the masses, or just for the few?  How many people actually want to travel the world and earn a living on the road?

I, for example, can’t imagine moving from place to place for more than a couple of months; I like stability, a home base and although I’ll admit to getting carried away sometimes with dreams of travelling, in reality I wouldn’t like it.

So is your lifestyle dream to travel the world, or do you have something completely different in mind?

Our dream is to travel Europe in our home! Our barge will be our home and because we will have all our belongings with us, we will have the best of both worlds. If we need some extra money, we can moor up in the winter and I can teach English somewhere. Pete is a builder, so he may be able to pick up some work too. Your dream of the sunshine also appeals though.

I like a little bit of both. I’d like to have a permanent home in a place people want to visit, but I also want the freedom to be able to take off for months at a time, but not until retirement. I’ve traveled for a month twice before and after a while, you get tired of living out of a suitcase and eating out all the time.

It’s a tough call. There’s still so much I want to do. I wish all companies offered sabbatical. I’d totally take one.

@FirstGenAmerican: We once considered owning a holiday home in Portugal, but couldn’t see how we would ever, with our jobs at the time, be able to spend enough time there to make it work…so we decided to move to our dream location and work there instead.

I couldn’t live out of a suitcase for any extended period of time so most of my holiday dreams are based on a two week stay; my need to escape has all but disappeared now that I’m not working a 60 hour week!

Hi Laura, not for another three years and ten months (!), when I can retire, early I hasten to add. So, until then we are working on the barge, getting rid of debts, sorting out stuff….well you know because you have been doing it all for a while, that’s why I enjoy your blog and learn a lot x

Fran: Thank you! It won’t be long..it’s quite frightening how quickly the time goes; I can’t believe we’re moving next year!

Hi Laura
When I grow up (or retire as it is also know) we intend to spend 3 months each year in the house here in England, 3 months in the Greek House, 3 months in the Syria house…..and the other three months on holiday!
Probably sick of it by end of year one.

@ Lizzie: I doubt you’ll want the holiday with all your other options ;)

Home is my castle. I can’t imagine not having a base. I’d like to one day find the ideal one, tucked away in the woods somewhere, away from the sights and sounds (and smells) of civilization. That’s probably a decade or more in the future though.

But sometimes the wanderlust does strike, and I want to get out and explore. I think it would be fun to complete a long-distance non-motorized travel adventure, like a through-hike of 4 months, or a cross-continent bicycle trek.

executioner:a home in the woods sounds good. I once had a holiday in woods and the peace and quiet was amazing…you can forget what it’s like to live without the sound of traffic! Have you visited Tony’s blog Regards From the Balcony, he has some great walks on his goals list.

Constant travel does not interest me. I want a base, somewhere I can call home. The problem with me is that I have never found that place, it may have a lot to do with the fact that everywhere I have lived has been to work. I do like going abroad but I found that living out of a suitcase or a rucksack and constantly moving around is draining after a couple of weeks.
