Vinyl’s and family treasure

November 9, 2008

in less is more

Yesterday I went to help a family member, who happens to be my mum, clear out her clutter. She will happily admit that she is over run with stuff, however it’s got so bad, that she needs help to sort through it and deal with it, this is where I come in. We started with her music collection.
Now my mum is a music, mainly jazz, queen and could probably open her own store, she has so much. She absolutely loves music, however realises that it is taking over her house and needs to clear some of it. She wants to sell on most of her vinyl records, just keeping the rare ones, as she no longer has anything to play them on and prefers a cd format. We sorted through them all bit by bit and she has only kept twenty, out of a collection of over two hundred, progress for her.

Best find of the day, a Dionne Warwick LP, my Dad bought for my mum in 1964, when she was pregnant with me, I bagged this. This is what de cluttering is all about, you don’t need to keep everything, you can just keep one item that means the most to you.

Hi there-It sounds like a real good day for both of you! Not so long ago, my mum decluttered her wardrobe and I got some of her original 50s dresses which fit me, so I was well chuffed! Well done on bagging the Dionne Warwick LP!!

My mum chucked away all my old 70s music without even asking me about them. There were a few there that I would have loved to have kept, just for the memories but I’ve come to conclusion now that the memories are there regardless of whether or not I have stuff to remind me of them.

I love Dionne Warwick :)

I’m trying to get my mother to help me declutter–but she just can’t do it yet. Even the outdated “Our World” book that still lists the USSR as a country has sentimental value! ARGH!

(Hmmm…I just posted a comment but my computer crashed, apologies if it pops up later and I’m repeating myself)

You’re so right, some things just need to be treasured – minimalism be damned! :)

I hope the decluttering wasn’t too tiring, it sounds like you’ve had a busy week of it

Hi Laura
I was helping my mum sort out photos and found a book that my grandad had given my grandma, with his love, just as he went off to war. Amazing stuff hiding in that clutter sometimes.

Loving this post! I on the other hand bought my kids records and a record player I put away for christmas this year. Should have looked through your mum’s albums!
