The Plan: Can we do it?

May 3, 2010

in goals

In a previous post I talked about how I like to plan into the future; I can’t help it; I like to plan our destination and keep working towards it; it keeps me motivated. Sometimes plans will change, and they have done for us, mortgage payoff anyone?, but you make changes and keep moving forward.

So, what are our current goals? Well I’ve added a page to the site that lays them out.

I’ve gone backwards and forwards between putting our money stuff on this blog, but after having a good think about it, I’ve decided to be more focused on it. The tag line to this blog is ‘living simply and moving abroad’ and this is what we’re are aiming to do, without millions in the bank; I want other people to see that you can live the life you want to without winning the lottery or earning thousands; in fact at the moment we’re aiming for it with one salary ;-)

Can it be done? well we’ll see; this site makes us fully accountable.

Ultimate Plan: 2030 2020

  1. Live in Portugal
  2. Run a small income producing business in Portugal
  3. Be mortgage free and financially independent by 2030 2020

and broken down;

2010-2011 {2 years}

  1. Complete house renovations
  2. Increase Net Worth to £100k
  3. Complete one travel goal {Vancouver}
  4. Fully Fund Big Trip Fund {£5k}

2012-2015

  1. Successfully rent out our house in the UK
  2. Move to Portugal
  3. Buy an apartment in Portugal
  4. Complete two travel goals
  5. Increase net worth to £180k

2016-2020

  1. Completely payoff mortgage {house in the UK}
  2. Increase Net Worth to £400k

Kudos to you for putting your goals up there where we can see them! Very brave of you! :) I did a similar thing on my site recently. I feel strongly that making your goals public does help. I can understand your reluctance to put financial goals up on your site, but that was one of the things I liked about your original site (remember the good ole days of Blogger?), you weren’t afraid to put your financials up. I must admit I have a dilemma with doing the same, but I’m hoping to share more info on that in the future. You’ve set some interesting and challenging goals there. It’s going to be an interesting journey!

I love your goal list. Sometimes I make goal lists and they stress me out… other times they help me focus.

Good plan. Will you buy a B&B business as a going concern, or will be starting from scratch?

Hi Dreamer; we are looking at owning a {very} small b&b or perhaps a house with rental opportunity – annexe/sep appartment etc.
Hubbie will be working {wants to be working} for some years to come, so we will be able to grow a small business while he is doing this.

Hi Emily and thank you. Sometimes my small weekly goals ‘to do list’ stresses me out, however the long term ones don’t; they give me purpose and I try to accomplish something, however small, towards them every day :-)

@tony, it does feel a little brave, but if I’m blogging about living a simple, frugal life in order to be able to move abroad, then I probably need to put the numbers out there; if people I know find me, then so be it..it’s only money!

I like that you put your goals on your blog. It makes me realize more what is your ultimate time line. And for those planning a trip abroad themselves it will help to see to what extent and if your plans differ from reality–and how you deal with those differences. I’ve found there are always surprises with this kind of thing, although I’m certainly not saying you shouldn’t set goals. I look forward to the updates.

Hello. I am new to your site but I really like what you’re doing here. And I hope that I can learn to live a little more simply. There’s a great niche of blogs developing about this kind of attitude within the realm of personal finance.

Do you have a part of portugal in mind already? Do you speak the language?

hi easychange and thanks for dropping by :-)

We are looking at the coast near to Lisbon, but it really depends on where on my husband gets a job; he is learning the language to work there, he’s into his third year doing it and it’s going quite well although we have struggled to find the higher leavel of teaching he needs in our part of the UK.
