Simplifying and Reducing: The Final Phase

Landing

I’ve posted this photo of our landing before, but I wanted to show you what lurks behind the door.

Over the last few months I’ve slowly been purging and simplifying all the rooms in our house. The trouble is when you do this the stuff has to go somewhere. Now some of it has been recycled or donated, but most of it is behind that door in our good old box room. It’s funny as Rachel blogged a similar thing the other day; where do people with organised homes keep their mess? Well it seems we all have a hidden room! ;-)

Box Room 01

Now that I’ve purged every room comes the task of selling it all and making some extra money. I’m inspired by other bloggers who have done this.

I’m giving myself the whole of February to clear that room out, leaving just our suitcases.

Less clutter = Freedom

I feel a car boot sale coming on…

What mess, Laura? All I see is a couple of boxes and a beautiful window! I think most of my boxes are full of stuff to sell too. The stuff that we wanted to donate is already gone, and selling stuff takes effort so we kept putting it off.

Hah! What lurks behind the door. I love it. In our current apartment, we don’t really have any ’storage’ space, closets etc. It’s been interesting with no place to toss stuff and forget about it. That said, we eventually came up with a system where we have a screen and behind it we put our laundry to dry, our bikes and an ‘projects’ that are ugly and in progress. If I’m making something or painting something, it goes there when tacky. If we’re packing a box or a suitcase or holding something to be hauled off to the dump or donated, that is our holding area. So it seems we’ve created this space for ourselves as well. If you eventually get rid of the stuff in you ‘holding’ area, then I see no harm in hiding it for a while. It takes the pressure off. Imagine if it was in your living room!

I have to laugh. I walk often, and in the summer lots of people leave their garage doors open and thats were all their stuff is. They can have the cleanest organized house and the garage looks like a tornado hit it.. :)
Thanks for your tips.

@simplelifeinfrance – ha, i wouldn’t sleep at night if that was in my living room!

@Erika, thanks for stopping by. We don’t have a garage, do have a shed though, which is next on my list

Thanks Mrs Money :-)

Have you ever seen that Friends episode where Chandler discovers Monica’s (played by Courtney Cox) mess? Open the closet door and it all falls out! LOL.

Yours, is NOT a mess! That is the neatest mess I have ever seen. How funny, I was just curious where ppl keep their ‘mess’ when they have these beautifully noncluttered rooms.
