Hi Tom,
great to hear from you and read your interesting comment. Things here have been going well and are, surprisingly, ahead of schedule. I agree with you it always makes sense to always have something to come back to. I think that's one advantage of letting out a property, you get the income and the capital appreciation. I've seen people move to Thailand (and other countries) and been subsequently unable to afford to buy back home in their "twilight years" due to appreciation of the market. I am conscious of the fact that I may not feel quite at home in SEAsia in my 70s as I might in my 50s. There's no doubt UK is heading for tough times, but property demand still outstrips supply. I still think over the longer period a real asset such as a house will prove a great investment in the UK at least. One thing I am clear about, I won't be buying in Asia. Renting is cheap and affordable.

If there is an *ideal* place in SEAsia I haven't found it yet - all countries have their pros and cons. I had a great time when I visited Philippines earlier this year. Singapore also looks promising, but more expensive. Always tradeoffs. I love Malaysia too, but for various reasons look to spend most time in Philippines (my partner is a filipina). There's a little village down in Batangas that looks perfect, and the diving is great too!

I understand your situation and think you are taking a wise approach. Maybe we should compare notes? I don't want to post my email address where it could potentially be spammed. If you want to get in touch, drop Laura an email. She has my email address (thanks Laura!).

All the best with your plans, and thanks for taking the time to comment.

Tony, very interesting article. Your situation is very similiar to mine with regard to age, timing considerations, leeraging property income etc I am keen on south east asia, just haven't been able to identify the best place for me yet, although I have visited thailand (several times), phillipines (acouple of times), indonesia and other areas. I have come to the conclusion that (unless there is an obvious choice), then it is better to allow time properly check out different locations before making more permanent commitments. I am also trapped in a cycle at the moment, in terms of being paid reasonably well, so every month in London would fund several months in asia. I guess that I will let that roll for a bit until I feel my numbers are more robust or until a business event triggers change. To my mind , I believe that before I go, I would need enough to come back and live in UK/Europe , just in case that option becomes a later choice. Also, with that funding, it would mean a better livestyle in asia, ability to travel, choice of location etc. I do realise of course that post 50, one is starting to trade time for money. I hope things work out for you and will watch with interest. Best Wishes.

@Anna: sounds great!

@SS4BC: yes, the diving there is excellent. I'm also a big fan of snorkeling - it's less encumbered, you just need a mask, snorkel and some flippers and that's it! The diving is also wonderful in Malaysia, and the Philippines. I have a friend who works as a diving instructor he moves with the seasons through Malaysia, Thailand, Micronesia, Indonesia and Philippines. There is great diving throughout SE Asia if that is what you are into. If you get a chance, give Thailand a go.
