Put some sparkle…..in your budget

by Laura on July 27, 2010

in simple living

I feel a new budget coming on.  I feel like mixing it up.  I feel like changing things.

I’m going to start with a blank piece of paper and write down our ideal budget.  Then I’m going to see how far away from that our actual budget is.  Then I’m going to make adjustments.

Watch this space, change is good :-)

Great idea to change it up a little! I have spent a good couple of hours yesterday and today going through my budget, stripping it back and getting my “bare bones budget” down. It’s been scary, how much money I am spending (and that is with it stripped down about as far as I am [willing!] to go!!) Honestly, I don’t know how some people afford it, because I am *not* on a ridiculously low wage (though it’s not “high” by any stretch!), and every ten pounds that comes my way is ear-marked for something now!
(it’s times like this I curse being single. Two incomes would be really handy ;) xx

I’m sure it’s a good idea to have a change in your budget once in a while. I expect it gets a bit stale and samey, so a shake up is refreshing and will give you a new enthusiasm for it.

It’s good to spruce things up now and again. I’ve got to the stage where I will sit down and crunch the numbers on what I’m spending every couple of months or so. I’ve been tracking expenses for so long (years) that I have a good gut feel for how the month has gone. Recently I surprised my friend Ana by guessing to within a pound how much the big shop we did at Tesco was going to cost. She was about £10 out. :) You get an instinct for the numbers. But it’s still important to sit down and review things every so often.

A budget is an excellent thing. I applaud you for taking the time to make a plan, one how you want it to be and the other how it actually is. Dave Ramsey says in his class on finances that it is 20% head knowledge, 80% action and if you don’t control your money it will control you! or as Zig Ziggler says, ifyou aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time. Keep up the good work.

Rachel I suspect that ‘some people’ are paying for stuff on a credit card! It’s great that you’ve allocated every £10 to something :-)
