I’m feeling very non frugal at the moment, so a quick list of my financial priorities in 2009 wouldn’t go amiss. It will focus me.
Main priorities:
- Build a food store cupboard, by buying items on sale
- Reduce the mortgage by at least £16,000
- Streamline my menu plans to keep grocery costs low -4 weekly revolving
- Keep house running costs below this years*
* By this, I mean the total cost combined of all the utility bills, council tax, water rates, insurance etc in 2009, to be less than 2008′s. I’m expecting an increase in the council tax and the water rates, this year they went up about 6%, but I intend to off set these increases by lowering the energy and telephone costs. We’ll see if it works.

Hi there-very good luck, I received a new higher water bill yesterday
Good luck!!! We are determined to reduce our utilities by a good 30 – 40%! My husband and kids are such energy wasters! I’d also like to reduce our insurance costs. Yikes, we pay a lot!

Hi Laura
Does this mean still on track for 2012? Have you got some secret weapon up your sleeve?
Good luck. If anyone can do it then you can.
Lizzie
Thanks Kris and Sharon
Hi Lizzie – we are a bit behind at the moment, about 7k, however we still plan to go in 2012. I’m going to blog about it later in the week.
No secret weapons apart from some equity in a company, which due to the economic situation at the moment is worth about £20!!
Good for you for having your goals already laid out. I don’t think I’ll get to putting mine on paper until mid-January.
Having said that, we are travelling through Central America for three weeks, and there’s nothing like a good backpacking trip to provide clarity.
It does help to have a focus doesn’t it! We have mananged to reduce our energy usage but have had to work at it! btw I have tagged you
