Next Step: Improving Our Finances

by Move to Portugal on March 26, 2009

in frugal living,goals & dreams

Yesterday I discussed how visualising your goals can help you to achieve them, today it’s about educating yourself about money.

I can’t emphasise enough just how much reading personal finance books has helped us so far. There are so many books, that you can borrow freely from a library, websites and blogs that can help you to understand personal finance.

There is no clear cut way for everyone, that’s why it’s called personal finance, every one’s situation is different. You have to find a way that works for your situation.

If I had to recommend one book it would be Your Money of Your Life. It can be hard going at times, but this book makes you examine your relationship with money. It can help you to start living your life on your own terms. It was this book that made us realise that you don’t need millions in the bank to retire from the rat race.

Hi Laura,
I’m so glad you mentioned the book YMOLY. I bought it, but have yet to read it–I think I’m intimidated. What do you recommend: reading it all the way through and then implementing stuff? Or did you read and implement along the way?

I’ll update your blog address on all my stuff today… ; )

Hi Kirwin. I read and implemented stuff along the way; not everything though. Some of it just didn’t apply to us.

I like Chapter 6: The American Dream on a Shoestring. I like the word enoughness. I think the shift we’ve made from never seeming to have enough, to reaching enoughness has changed our lives.

Thanks for updating all your links etc :)

I read that book too. and it is truly mind altering! however I am still to actually do all the things it says!!! I kind of half did an audit, my income has been so all over the place I really could not exactly say how much I earnt in my lifetime. And as for the stuff I have. I think it did at least set me on the course of decluttering it!!!! I do track my spending. But not quite so faithfully as them. For me the key things was the enoughness and also how much working can cost. ie your real hourly wage. makes being a stay at home mum much more bearable.
