As our move to Portugal get a little closer {!} I’m becoming increasingly aware of all the lovely places in the UK that I’ve not visited. I know that once we’ve moved abroad visits back home will be to see our families and not to sight see.

So I’m looking for ideas; places to go for a weekend trip. I already have Edinburgh and Brighton on my list as I’ve never been to either, but what other locations would you recommend?

Cardiff is great for a weekend, and Stratford is one of my other favourites.

Well if you come to Brighton let me know! We could meet up! Or at the very least I could give you the tip top insider low down on my fave spots etc. I would also add Southwold or Aldeburgh in Suffolk. Beautiful places both. And you could stay at my folks holiday cottage if you went there (see http://www.chestnuttstudios.co.uk) Other than that, the Lake District is pretty spectacular – stay at Ambleside – its really central and pretty in itself too.

I would highly recommend the Isle of Wight, but with ferry costs being the highest travel cost per mile ANYWHERE, you might want to save it for the day when 5 plus the bonus ball comes your way!

If you make the trip up to Edinburgh you should also try to get out into the Scottish countryside. Aviemore is a particular favourite for beautiful walks.

How about St Michael’s Mount in Marazion, Cornwall? Is there anything more romantic than a good old English castle perched on its very own island? One of the few locations that are just as good with a bit of atmospheric mist as it is in the sunshine!
