I’m currently trying to work out how many Electric/Gas units we are using per week. I’ve taken meter reading’s on Tuesday night and will report back next week on the amounts.
We have a dual fuel supply through British Gas which gives us a saving of £2.78 per quarter and we also receive a Direct Debit discount of £9.82 per quarter. The charges for gas are quite confusing, however I will endeavour to get my head round them by next week!
We are trying to reduce costs by switching off lights and tv’s and we’ve reduced the amount of time the heating is on. Extra jumper’s are being worn.

Yes, I’ve had real problems trying to get clarity on my Gas and Electricity bills (both with British Gas). One could almost believe that the bills are deliberately confusing (like mobile phone bills).
I think it’s a great idea to keep track of your meter readings though. That provides a useful cross-check. They do get bills wrong – I can vouch for that. Especially if your meters are inside. They use an “estimate” – which means you pay too much (it’s rarely in your favour). Fortunately, my meters are outside so they can read them and don’t need to make estimates.
At the end of the day just using less, like you are doing, has got to help the bottom line.
I noticed a significant hike in utility costs last year – then a smaller drop – but the bills are still higher than I would like!
