I read a post the other day, can’t remember where, about the skills your parents had passed onto you and I got to thinking about my own parents and what they had taught me.
The main thing that came to mind was my Dad teaching me some basic DIY skills; painting, hanging wallpaper, putting up shelves; all the basics.
I have vivid memories of being my Dad’s wallpapering mate, which at the time was fun, but now years later it’s an invaluable skill that I have. When looking for evening classes recently I thought about a language course however realised my time would be much better served enhancing my DIY skills, unfortunately I haven’t found anything yet that a) fits the bill and b) is local; until I find something then I’ll continue to use the Internet or a good library book as a resource.
When you’re moving towards a simpler life learning to do things yourself is part of the journey; learning to make your own dishcloths, make your own bread or put up your own shelving is all part of the process; it can also save you a lot of money.
What is your approach to DIY? Can you do it yourself? What skills did your parents pass on to you?
PS. Thank you for all your support and comments on my last post, I’m still thinking, perhaps over thinking {!}, what to do next but as soon as I reach a decision I’ll let you all know
