We know that for us to have a better life in Portugal it would be better for at least one of us to speak Portuguese fluently. Now as it might be him that needs to get a job over there we decided that he should be the one to learn it.
He started a few weeks ago and is coming along nicely although it is getting harder. We chose a CD and book course so that he’s able to listen to the CD while driving to work. There was no evening classes available anywhere that we could find.
While he spends a few hours of his spare time learning Portuguese I spend my time meal planning, shopping at every supermarket and batch cooking so that we can keep the grocery shopping bill as low as possible.

Hi Laura,
Thanks for linking me. Although I was born here, and “I though I spoke fluently” having lived so many years abroad changes things and I now have a funny accent too. But very much in a discovery period and have fallen in love with my little Portugal all over again. I can completely understand why you’d want to make the move to the Algarve, it’s amazing and we love it!
Look forward to seeing you here in 2012!
Eddie

Hello!
I found your blog trough Rachel´s Turnonepoundintoonemillion. I´m from Portugal and I live in Algarve.
Portuguese is a difficult language, but with a litle persistence you can learn the basics in a few months. It´s like other languages, you just need to practise.
If there´s anything I can help, just mail me to: nightextras@iol.pt
Best Regards, and luck for your project.
Mizé.
