Keeping It Simple {Menu Planning}

April 13, 2010

in frugal living

I’ve changed how I run my menu plan. Again. To keep is nice and simple I’m now rocking a seven day plan, which I then repeat every week.

  • Monday: Salmon and Vegetables
  • Tuesday: Chicken Curry and Rice
  • Wednesday: Vegetable Pizza & Salad
  • Thursday: Pasta Bolognaise
  • Friday: Chickpea Curry
  • Saturday: Surprise
  • Sunday: Chilli and Rice

I’m happy with it on lots of counts; it includes two vegetarian meals, I batch cook three of the meals {chicken curry, bolognaise and chilli} ,all my family like all the meals and it’s eliminated my food waste. It’s also uncomplicated and frugal; two things I like.  :-)

Does anyone else menu plan like this or do you like to mix it up every week?

totally making it up as I go along. and I wonder why I can’t stick to a food budget! Mind you – we ate frugally today! stuff from the fridge or freezer. No spend today! I like the repetition each week. If it were just me, I would probably eat the same thing every day. it would be healthy and balanced mind you!

The wife and I cook one or two meals per week, and eat the same things for lunch/dinner 5 or 6 days in a row (weekends we improvise). It means very little time each week required in the kitchen, just a big push for several hours on Saturday or Sunday (plus some big cooking pots). We mostly cook vegetarian meals these days…which is fine by me.

Ho mo, the repetition is good, especially when it’s food we all like.

Hi executioner; if I had my way I would do this too, but this way is a good compromise for us as a family. I’m slowly moving things towards a more vegetarian diet {another thing that would suit me}

I sometimes wish I had time to plan menus but then, when I think about it, I realise it wouldn’t really work for us for various reasons and I’m happy with that. I’m veggie and the family are not making planning more complicated; Time at the evenings and weekends varies so much it would be difficult to stick to or find time to plan or batch cook; When I get my organic fruit/veggie box I have to go with whatever’s in it and I’ve usually just done the weekly shop when it arrives.

Coming to your house for dinner. :)

I need a good curry. It’s been to long since I had one. Luckily, there is this Indian place by my work. For $3.50 you get a TON of food. *spoiled*

Congrats on keeping the menu plan up. I’ve been so lackadaisical about it and then I grumble when i come home because I don’t know what to make. LOL. Since my DH has been working overtime, I think its time to start planning some slowcooker meals again.

I tend to stock up on staples each month, then pick up my fresh fruits and veggies, go back to my house and see what I can make with it for the week.

Friday nights are pizza night (always)
I usually make 1-2 bean, chickpea and lentil dish a week (then we eat leftovers)
I tend to have one quiche night–where I stick the veggie of the week in the quiche
I also do one gratin night where I mix a veggie with either rice or pasta, cover it with cheese and grill it a bit.

The above typically ends in quite a bit of leftovers which we either eat on the spot or freeze for next week. Sometimes, on weekends, I plan a meat dish. . .
