House Projects – Small Hall (Before)

January 22, 2012

in house renovation

I’m not feeling any motivation for house projects at the moment, but I really need to get started on the update to our small hall. It’s at the side of our house and embarrassingly grubby. So grubby that I’m horrified when visitors first set eyes on it.

It’s the main entrance to our house and so the place where we dump all our shoes and coats….and apparently where I store my vases!  It also houses the electric meter, the fuse box and the door to the under stairs cupboard, all which are damaged in some way. There’s quite a bit of work for such a small area, but it has to be be done….on a budget of course.

Here you can see the unpainted mdf shelf (unpainted since 2006!) and coat hooks

And the shoe rack underneath it.

Of course I have a little to do list:

To do (small hall):

  • Get quote for woodwork
  • Replace backdoor step
  • Replace rotten under stairs door frame
  • Box in meter (or remove all)
  • Prepare walls
  • Paint ceiling
  • Paint walls
  • Paint mdf shelf
  • Undercoat door frame
  • Gloss door and frame
  • Clean floor tiles

At the moment the electric meter is half boxed it and we need to either have the job completed, or remove all the wood completely – it just depends on the cost.

I’m not putting a demanding time frame on this project, I just want to get started on it, and if possible, have it completed by the end of March. Hmm. Ten weeks. Should be long enough! ;)

Are you procrastinating on anything house projects?

I’m sure you will love it when it is finished! These small but complex projects are so hard to get started but wonderful to have done. What color are you going to paint the area?

Thanks Juhli – I’m going to paint it a similar colour as we already have the paint.

Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Ever since we had hardwoods put in our familyroom, I’m happy for now. No projects in the works…just savings, savings and savings.

I’m sure by April I will come up with something….

I have lots of big projects I still need to do but this one is small and shouldn’t be too costly….hopefully!

Lots and lots of projects to do around here though to my credit I have been plugging away at a few of them and it’s amazing how a flooded basement will spur a person on to get some things done lol! I like how you’re taking one area at a time and getting it done. (I’m still waiting for my daughter to move out and my 17 year old cat to pass on before I really get into the redecorating!)

I think we all do Michelle – with us it’s always the small jobs – not the big!

after living in a renovation zone for the past nearly three years, yep we ahve a few jobs to do!!!!

Two jobs that we must/want to do this year is have the garage roof shingled and hopefully afford to have the outside of the house re-pointed. First though we would like to get the new basement finished.

Renovation projects always seem to take longer than expected – we started 6 years ago and there still seems so much to do! Never mind. Onward and upward :)

Wow..you call that grubby? My shoe closet is just a big pile of shoes on no rack whatsoever. I just bring a laundry basket down the stairs every once in a while and put the majority of the shoes back in their respective closets when it gets out of hand. You definitely are an organization inspiration.
