Grocery Budget Challenge:Result

by Move to Portugal on March 19, 2010

in frugal living

My target was to spend £50 a week/£200 for the four weeks from 18th February – 17th March and I spent £246.54; not too bad and a reduction on last month.

I’m finding it very difficult to reduce it even more, especially now that there are four of us, and I’m not sure that I even want to. So I’m going to stop focusing on the cost so much and focus more on the quality of the food we eat.

I’m making fairly good progress with this already by taking baby steps towards being totally organic and banishing the ready meal from our diets, but there’s still a long way to go; it’s a learning curve for me, as I’m no expert on healthy eating.

that is pretty good. I have been trying really hard and am finding it very difficult too. Its good to have tried and I think I have definately managed to reduce it somewhat. But am currently at an average of £82.83 per week. I don’t quite understand it.

hi mo; it is very difficult isn’t it. One thing I’ve done this month is stick to ‘the once a week shop’ which has stopped me buying little extra mid week; I realise this is difficult for you without a car; perhaps you could get a weekly delivery?

I agree with Mo–it is a pretty good budget for a family of four. I don’t go much under that for our family of two!

And health is not something to give up! I always splurge for plenty of healthy veggies when I’m shopping–I pick the best and the healthiest, not the cheapest. I sometimes work to make up for that by cooking a lot of dried lentils and beans too, and by making our bread, but hey, there are limits!

I joined in and tried to reduce my grocery spending too. I managed to cut down a bit was dissapointed with the results overall. Thinking about it since, I’ve also come to the conclusion that I’m not going to compromise and give up organic fruit/veggies etc and that I do the best I can given my circumstances. When work takes up less of my time I will devote more energy to meal planning/bulk cooking/stock piling and the like. Thanks for the opportunity anyway, it’s made me relax about it an realise that it’s not possible just yet!

@simple in france – your right health is not something to give up!

@teresa I think it’s important not to stress too much over it; as long as we’re doing what we can, then it’s all good :-)
