Frugal habits: Packed lunches

May 20, 2010

in frugal living

I was thinking about the frugal things we do everyday, that have now become a habit.

The first thing I thought of was my obsession with turning electrical items off at the plug, which I do all the time {like a mad woman}, the second thing was our devotion to packed lunches.

We made the switch to packed lunches quite a while ago and, although it’s a frugal cliche, I would hesitate to guess how much money it has saved us over the last few years; I know it’s a lot.

We keep our lunches very simple, sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, raisins a biscuit and a flask of drink; easy to make and easy to eat.

I think one of the things that put people of a packed lunch is boredom whereas we take a different attitude, it’s just lunch; I also think know that my husband still smiles every time he eats his, all these years later, knowing it’s saving him money!

What about you, do you always take a packed lunch?

Hi MtP, We always have packed lunches (and always have). I was one of 5 children so buying lunch out was a very rare treat. Now, every evening, I make a packed lunch of sandwiches plus 2 or 3 items from cake, biscuits, nuts, dried fruit, fresh fruit or crips for my OH and DS. I have either soup, cottage cheese and veg sticks, cous cous or pasta with veg or jacket potato with beans. We occasionally have a lunch out on the weekend but very rarely. My favourite packed lunch is when we go with a big group of friends to the local castle during the music festival weekend and picnic on the Fountain Court with hundreds of other people while listening to a Welsh Male Voice Choir!! Blisss!!

When I was working in an office I didn’t really take in a packed lunch though it seems ridiculous to me now that I’d spend on average £5-7 A DAY on LUNCH. The horror! Now The Boy takes a packed lunch in most days to work and it consists of leftovers. Though this morning he was very cute in the kitchen making himself a pastrami sandwich and buttering his bread just so. Bless!

we always have packed lunches, it saves so much money when we go out with the children! we have sandwiches with homemade bread, fruit and a biscuit (either homemade or bought, sometimes they are on offer at the local shop and its good to have a pack in the cupboard if we are in a rush) we also take two 1 litre bottles of high juice so we don’t have to waste money of drinks for the kids! it is expensive to buy snacks on the run!

I am with you on turning off electrical items. I’m a fan of packed lunches too. I don’t go to work as such any more, so I don’t use them as much as I used to. Out and about though they are the business. :)

I work shifts so some days are 9-5 and some are 2:30-10:30. I find it really hard to stick to doing packed lunches but I can definitely see how it works.

Once the boyfriend moves in I think I’ll give it a go and see if I can stick to it for a month. I can feel a June challenge coming on!

I believe that bringing a packed lunch is a good way to save up money as well as you can stay healthy and fit because you can control the food you’ll eat. Unlike when eating outside or in fast-foods, you’ll only get increase in expenses, and unhealthy food. At times when you want to packed your lunch, you might love to try a stainless steel container. It is more affordable than using plastic wares, plastic bags or even paper bags because it is reusable, safe, portable, has spill proof and eco-friendly too. I’m sure you’ll love it too. ;-)

I do both :)
I pack most dinners for me and my daughter. Sometimes I take leftovers for me but I always cook something fresh for my daughter. The result is cooking at 2.00 am but it sure helps me save a lot of money.
I also perform the “mad woman turning electrical items off at the plug” act :)
Hugs xx
