In November I wrote a post about essential living costs in our present home here in the UK. I commented on how, when we live in Portugal, I would want our basic living expenses to be less than £1k, so that we can live the life we want to, and wondered if this is possible right now in our current home; at the time we were paying £1,114.19 a month.
Since doing that post, there have been changes:
- Grocery spending has increased; my son has moved back home, he is however paying board and contributing towards this.
- Gas and electric has reduced; changing tariffs and careful use
- Water costs have reduced slightly; reduction in annual bill!
- Telephone line rental reduced; we stopped making calls that cost money
We are getting there.
This is what I’m working towards all the time; less spending on living costs, so that there is more to spend on living!

Thanks for the budget update. Chipping away at some of those every-month items can be tough, but worthwhile!

You’re doing a great job at minimizing your costs.
Is living in Portugal as expensive to live in the UK? If I lived in some other state California, I would beable to save much more!

@money funk Thanks Christine. It’s a little cheaper depending on where you live.
