Sandy: I’d choose ocean and city, that’s why I like the Lisbon coast as it has both.

We’ve given a lot of thought to friends/family and understand that we will need to very careful not to let things lapse so will budget monies for flights home etc; we’re also looking forward to making new friends in Portugal

I like this list, although my ideal location would have mountains and ocean in the same vicinity.

I guess the other thing I’d add is to be close enough or rich enough (in time and/or money) to be able to visit your dearest friends and family on a regular basis. Alternatively, be in a place with like minded people so that you can build a new set of relationships that are as gratifying. For me, there must be a social aspect in order for the plan to be successful.

Great list – I think you’ve pretty much nailed it. I recently made a similar list – feels good to have it down on paper! There’s so much more freedom in simple living it gets me excited just thinking about the possibilities.

Hi Monevator – we haven’t touched on prices much as until my husband finds a job, we have no idea where we will be settling – prices vary so much from one end of Portugal to the other; in Central Portugal there are some real bargains to be had, in The Algarve not so much. Lisbon has great properties however my husband would prefer to be nearer to the coast. Cheers for dropping by
