One of my goals for this year was to get reading and I’m pleased to say it’s happened; I’ve read so many books that I’ve lost count, although I’ve not read everything on my original list!

I started off the year with really good intentions to read a few classics mixed in with a few contemporary books; well the classics haven’t really happened. If I’m totally honest my favourite reads have been the Twilight series. Once I read the first one back in January I became obsessed and devoured the other three as soon as possible; this resulted in an interesting conversation between me and my eldest daughter.

My eldest daughter is studying English at University and I got several ‘oh Mum’s’ for loving Twilight..I told her not to be a book snob…lol…we had an interesting conversation about not being able to help what reading material you love; I don’t think you can help it, it’s a natural thing. I also told her I’m not going to go around pretending I love Dickens just because it makes me look clever {I do love Dickens, that was just an example} Anyways it was a light heated bit of jostling which ended in her refusing to buy me the DVD for my birthday :-)

So what books have you loved so far this year? Have you got some must reads for the next six months? Please let me know as I love being a reader again :-)

There are so many culture ‘snobs’ out there – whether it’s books, TV, film, whatever. I like trash. I like trashy books, I like trashy telly. I like other stuff too, but I like trash. And I’m not ashamed to admit it. And the main problem my culture snob friends seem to have with this is not that I like the trash, but that I’m not ashamed that I like it. Funny old world, eh?!

Dude, my go-to fluff books are sweet valley high, I think you are at least a notch above that, sparkly vampires and all :p
I *loved* “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society”, if you haven’t read that, do, it is like a comfort blanket in literary form.
Today I started “The Help”, which has been on my to-read list for just about ever. I’m only a chapter or so in and hooked already.
I’m thinking of doing a book round-up on my blog soon, I love trading recommendations with people :) xx

Hi,

We have loved having more time to read since moving to Portugal.

Some things we have enjoyed in the last couple of months:

The Steig Larsson “Millenium” trilogy.
Jonathan Coe “What a Carve Up”
David Nicholls “One Day”
Victoria Hislop “The Return”

Enjoy!

Ps. My wife loved the twilight books too.

I’ve been trying to find more reading time this year and have just finished my 6th book. Not many I know but pretty good for me actually! It was The Kite Runner (lent to me by my mother) by the same author as A Thousand Splendid Sons which I haven’t read but a lot of people rate it quite highly. It was a good read if a bit predictable in places but a eye-opening look at life in Afghanistan.

@ Ben, it’s so nice to have time for simple pleasures isn’t it? Thanks for the book list, the Larsson books are on my list!

@Teresa A Thousand Splendid is my fav fiction book ever, I couldn’t put it down the first time and then I read it again; very moving :-)

ah yes, reading for pleasure. I have not read for pleasure in a while. Maybe I will squeeze in some light reading for a change this summer.

I love to read but it’s been limited to blogs and magazines lately. I’m going to join in on a summer reading list organized by My Pretty Pennies. Everyone should join in that’s interested. The first book is “Eat, Pray, Love”.

My husband read the Twilight series and enjoyed it as well. We’ve seen the first two movies together and will finish the movie series too.
