For the second organising project in the series we are going to work on another area that we use daily, our make-up bag.
I’ve always had a simple approach to make up, and yet over the years items just seemed to appear in my make-up bag, items that I would never use regularly. Last year I decided to limit my make up usage to only five products and it has simplified my morning routine immensely. Five may be too few for you, but for a simple morning routine I would recommend no more than ten.
To start:
- Empty all the products from your bag
- Clean out your bag
- If your bag is dirty you may want to buy a new one*
De-Clutter:
- Sort through and throw away any messy, cloggy or broken items
- Throw away any unused products (more than 6 months)
- Throw away any dirty brushes and sponges
Organise:
- Now assess your daily make up routine, is it working for you?
- How many products do you need to use daily? Can you minimise this?
- Now put all the items you are keeping back in your bag
That’s it! You should now have a simple morning routine that doesn’t mean you have to search through your make-up bag to find things.
*I’m trying not to get you spending any money for these projects so I’m hoping you had a new make-up/toiletry bag somewhere in your Christmas stocking.

Ha, ha, at last one peice of organisaing advice which I dont need to do. My make up bag is clean and neat and just exactly how I need it. I have eyeliner for day and the the full kit of special evenings, perfume/body spray, spare bracelets and jazzy earrings in case I suddenly have to smarten up.This means I can spend my alloted organising time today doing the cutlery drawer which I didnt do last Sunday!
Thanks Laura

Excellent one, Laura. Have done mine already (gold star!). Now I just have to tackle the large drawer my overspill make-up and other toiletries are in – think I’ll make that a project for tomorrow! Thanks again – Caroline x

Aha! For once I’m ahead of the game. I did this a few weeks ago. I chucked out so much that there’s hardly anything left now, but that’s ok because I rarely wear make-up anyway.

It looks like we are more well behaved with our make up than our kitchen drawers..:)

Brilliant, I’m going to have a go at this this week.
All I’d say is never throw away makeup brushes, they always end up having weird and wonderful uses….one of my old blusher brushes now cleans the other half’s coffee maker and another ex-eyeliner brush I find is really good for getting dustbunnies out between they keys on my keyboard! If you have brushes that you love, you can also wash them in a bit of shampoo and dry them (flat, with the ends off the side of a table…if you dry them standing up it ruins the glue that holds the bristles in) and normally they’re good as new again….(sorry, am a bit of a make up fiend)
Can’t wait for Project No.3!!!

hey there,
i dont have a comment about this particular post, but I was wondering if you could answer a few questions?? I am thinking of going to portugal this year and was wondering if you could recommend a phrase book for learning portuguese?? I have looked around and so far the two I like are the rough guides one and collins portuguese phrase book. I was wondering if you have ever used them and which one did you find helpful? Also if you have ever been to the azores and if you had a recommendation on which books are best for going there as well?

Jade is right, make-up brushes can be cleaned. I clean mine every couple of months in a gentle tea-tree oil and warm water combination. It gets rid of bacteria (as tea tree is anti-bacterial), and leaves the bristles lovely and good as new. You can get a much longer life out of them – a good thing if you want to invest in some expensive brushes.

hey there, i’m back on-line and trying to catch up on some reading!!! I have to say, now that I’m back on the road, so to speak, I’ve ditched the make-up again. Problem solved. I might still make myself (out of scraps of material of course) a new bag anyways though!!!!!!
