I have an infinite number of mismatched ones but I can't bear to throw them away or do anything else with them just in case the other one miraculously turns up one day....you're right though, it's time to begin the cull! So, I don't hesitate to throw away socks that wear out one at a time. In practice, though, it doesn't make much difference. Once the socks in a cohort start to wear out, they all go pretty quickly.
